DJI Video Receiver & DJI Transmission (Standard Combo)

DJI has announced the DJI Video Receiver and DJI Transmission (Standard Combo) wireless transmission system. The new DJI Video Receiver was specifically designed to be used with production monitors.

Essentially, all DJI has done is introduce a new stand-alone RX unit as well as offer a kit that comes with both an RX and TX unit.

There are now two different combos available, the High-Bright Monitor Combo and Standard Combo. The High-Bright Monitor Combo has been on the market already for quite some time.

The High-Bright Monitor Combo integrates reception, monitoring, recording, and control into one solution, while the Standard Combo, which additionally supports metadata transmissions via SDI and the output of fractional frame rates, was designed for use with production monitors.

The company is touting that the DJI Transmission series set a new standard for extended-range stability and low-latency transmission.

The DJI Wireless Video Receiver was the missing link in the chain as previously you could only receive video using the High-Bright Monitor that features an integrated RX unit.

It is a little odd why it has taken DJI so long to bring out a dedicated stand-alone RX unit.

The DJI Video Receiver weighs approx. 350 g (excluding antenna).

The receiver supports automatic frequency hopping to find the strongest signal, and it operates using AES 256 encryption to protect your video from being seen by unwanted people. It also allows you to simultaneously receive alongside other receivers such as the High-Bright Remote Monitor, and the separately available transmitter can transmit to unlimited receivers in broadcast mode with a slightly lower performance.

The receiver can be powered via an optional L-series battery, an optional WB37 battery, or its DC power input.

It supports transmission at 1080p60 with a max bitrate of 50 Mb/s as well as live audio monitoring at 16-bit 48 kHz. After linking The RX unit with the DJI Video Transmitter in Control mode, you can set the USB-C function on both the transmitter and receiver to Voice Call. You then connect headphones with a built-in mic to the USB-C ports on the transmitter and receiver to enable voice calls.

The DJI Transmission (Standard Combo) allows one transmitter to be used with multiple receivers so you can send video and audio feeds in two different transmission modes. In Broadcast Mode, an unlimited number of receivers can simultaneously output real-time feeds. This makes it a good solution for large crews and when you have multiple teams on set. It gives you the ability to utilize camera index switching and real-time display of bitrate and video codecs.

If you require more advanced control options, the High-Bright Remote Monitor and the Video Receiver can be switched to Control Mode, allowing seamless integration with DJI Master Wheels and other control devices. This enables remote control of Ronin 2, RS 3 Pro, and camera focus on up to two receiving ends, without affecting other devices connected via Broadcast Mode. Additionally, the Video Receiver supports voice calls, allowing real-time, one-on-one, ultra-long-distance communication between the cinematographer and the director.

While it is impressive that you can transmit 1080p60 video using the highly efficient O3 Pro transmission technology over 3 miles (line-of-sight with the Wireless Video Transmitter, you do have to clearly remember that this isn’t a latency-free uncompressed system. It can only send compressed video using Wi-Fi 2.4 and 5 GHz frequencies.

DJI claims that the latency when shooting is 70 ms for 1080p/60fps video.

The DJI Video Receiver supports camera metadata transmission via SDI, offering compatibility with mainstream cinema cameras such as ARRI and RED. Detailed shooting information, including file name, timecode, recording trigger, camera settings, and lens information, can be transmitted from the receiver to monitors and QTAKE. This feature enables directors, cinematographers, and DIT teams to receive comprehensive shooting data.

The Video Receiver is equipped with versatile ports to support various connectivity options. Its dual 3G-SDI Output Ports support the output of 1080p/60fps videos and its HDMI 1.4 Type-A Output Port enables the output of 1080p/60fps videos.

The DJI High-Bright Remote Monitor features a built-in receiver. It is equipped with an image processing chip similar to the one used on the Ronin 4D. This remote monitor was specifically designed to offer users comprehensive features for receiving, monitoring, control, and recording.

The High-Bright Remote Monitor features the usual array of video monitoring tools such as false color, peaking, waveform, tapping twice to zoom, safe zone, frame guide, and zebras, as well as screen color calibration and custom 3D LUTs. There is also a microSD card slot for independent recording and storage of up to 1080p/60fps H.264 live feeds. The monitor synchronizes recording with the camera, allowing you to create proxies for editing.

The High-Bright Remote Monitor is compatible with Ronin 4D Hand Grips, giving you control over Ronin 2 or RS 3 Pro gimbal movements, focusing, and camera parameter adjustments. It also offers compatibility with DJI Master Wheels and DJI Force Pro, expanding the range of advanced control options for gimbal operations.

With the DJI LiDAR Range Finder (RS) to DJI Transmission Cable Hub, it is now possible to create an integrated stand-alone focusing and monitoring system. By connecting the DJI Video Transmitter and the DJI RS Focus Motor (2022) to the LiDAR Range Finder (RS), users can do independent lens calibration and autofocus even with a manual lens, eliminating the need for a connection to the RS 3 Pro. It is also possible to use the Ronin 4D Hand Grips to connect this setup and benefit from LiDAR waveform technology, for more precise manual focusing.

When connected to the DJI RS 3 Pro, this configuration provides a solution that seamlessly integrates stabilization, remote monitoring, gimbal control, and LiDAR focusing.

The DJI Transmission (Standard Combo) and DJI Video Receiver are now available to purchase. The DJI Transmission (Standard Combo) retails for $2,499 USD and includes one DJI Video Transmitter, one DJI Video Receiver, Installation Toolkit, two WB37 Intelligent Batteries, one WB37 Battery Charging Hub, as well as various cables and battery adapters. This is pretty expensive considering it isn’t a latency-free uncompressed system, however, it does offer an impressive range.

The DJI Video Receiver retails for $1,699 USD.

The existing High-Bright Monitor Combo also retails for $2,499 USD.

Users who have already purchased the DJI Transmission (High-Bright Monitor Combo) need to upgrade the Video Transmitter and High-Bright Remote Monitor to the firmware version 01.05.05.00 before connecting with the new DJI Video Transmitter and DJI Video Receiver in the DJI Transmission (Standard Combo).

The DJI wireless video transmission makes a lot of sense if you are heavily invested in the DJI ecosystem and are using the Ronin 4D or RS 3 Pro, etc.
